Hawston girls rugby team in need of gear

At the beginning of term 2, Hawston Secondary established a girls’ rugby team with the help of the head coach, Thomas Chowles, and assistant coach, Gabby Fisher, who is an ex Springboks player.

At the time most of the learners had never played rugby before, but they quickly got the hang of it, and excelled, with the expertise and experience of their coaches. These girls are dedicated and hardworking. They practise every Tuesday and Thursday with the coaches, and they also practise on their own most days, including weekends.

Hawston played a few matches against schools in the district that have been playing for a while already, and they lost only one of these matches. It was quite obvious that some of the girls have a lot of talent and were scouted to participate in the Boland Trials after just three games.

Eight of their players were chosen to represent Boland, four in the u-16 team and four in the u-18 team. They are Nikita Andries, Jaymee Julies, Michayla Hunter and Zena Swart for the u-16 team. Jaydeen Solomons, Jasmine Gertse, Britney Pieters and Jade Avontuur will represent Boland in the u-18 team.

These girls will be in Johannesburg from 15 June to 20 June to participate in a national tournament, where teams from all the provinces will participate. Because this is a new sport code, the school did not budget for the team, so the ladies’ rugby is in desperate need of equipment and gear.

If there is anyone willing to sponsor the team, please contact the team manager, Clair Philander, on 072 762 4510 or email philander.clair@gmail.com.
