Hermanus angling club hosts a successful Galjoen Derby

This past Saturday (31 August), the Hermanus Shore Angling Club held its annual Galjoen Derby.

This was a catch and release competition and all of the anglers were encourged to release their catches after a measurement was taken and recorded. This is to promote sustainable sports fishing in our area.

A total of 62 anglers took part in the event. It was a tough days fishing for some, with rough seas and an extreme tide testing everyone’s skills and knowledge. In total anglers caught 33 Galjoen, 3 White Steenbras, 1 Kolstert and a big Mussel Cracker.

The prize giving was held at the Hermanus Old Boys Club.

The following anglers won in the various categories:

Mel Fuller - Biggest Galjoen (Open).

Brian McFarlane - 2nd Biggest Galjoen.

Elzaan Engelbrecht - Biggest Galjoen (Ladies).

Isabella Zietsman - Biggest Galjoen (Junior).

Alwyn Geldenhuys - Biggest edible fish caught.

Heinrich Lourens - Biggest Individual bag.

Alwyn Geldenhuys, Michele Helfrich, Willem Opperman and Willie Holme (Rooi Aas Rebels) - Biggest Team Bag.
