Lomond was a lush triathlon affair

The Lomond Triathlon, which took place at the lush Lomond Wine Estate, proved to be a huge success.

The race, now in its second year, has gone from strength to strength, with a 50% growth in numbers, and has become a permanent fixture on the triathlon calendar. It took place on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 December.

“Participants were spoiled with perfect triathlon weather, a pristine dam to swim in as well as beautiful fynbos and vineyards to cycle and run among,” said Jacques de Villiers, managing director of Scuttle Events.

He explained the long race consisted of a 1 200 m swim, 30 km MTB and a 12 km run. “The short race took place over a 400 m swim, 15 km MTB and 6 km run,” De Villiers said.

“At the finish line, spectators and triathletes, alike, were treated to the finest Lomond wine and music by local artist Deon Valor. Also, the short race was the most popular event and many participants enjoyed the thrill of their very first triathlon.

“Promoted as a family event, many family teams also entered and enjoyed a day full of fun and laughter.” De Villiers pointed out that the route took participants through Lomond Wines’ brand new wine cellar.

On Sunday, the first Lomond Open Water swim was held with three distances on offer, a 500 m, a mile (1,6 km) and a 3 km. “It was well attended, and will again take place in 2019,” De Villiers concluded.
