New squash centre impresses

The brand new squash centre at the Hermanus sports venue impressed and provided hearty enjoyment to the many visitors at this year’s Harbour Rock summers day squash tournament which was played on Saturday 28 December.

According to the organisers of the event, the “superb quality of four courts” drew positive comments. The courts have been made according to the new international standards and measurements, with the walls imported from ASB, an international company which has already built 7 500 courts in 70 countries. Normally squash courts are built using brick and plaster, these walls are made of free standing aluminium profiles, covered with high-density panels. This ensures an absolutely smooth finish, with no deviations sometimes caused by the plastering and painting of brick walls. Because it is free standing it cannot be harmed by cracks or thermal influences of the centre’s outside walls, which makes it more durable.

The profiles have a cavity in the middle, which is filled with silicate sand. This gives the wall the required surface hardness needed when the ball hits the wall.

The lay-out of the courts also impressed. The four glass-back courts lay two-two next to each other, with a spectator area in the middle. That means that a spectator standing in the middle can watch all 4 games simultaneously.

The spectator area has a walkway above it to the clubhouse restaurant, from where spectators, refreshments in hand, can watch the games. For students of the game and juniors, this is very helpful, as the player’s court craft and placement of the ball can be better seen with a bird’s eye view.
