See Blitsbokkies in action at high school

Women’s rugby at its best will be showcased during the second annual Women’s Sevens Rugby tournament next week.

The Blitsbokkies, women’s rugby teams from Mozambique and Zimbabwe and teams from the Boland and Overberg can be seen in action on Hermanus High School’s rugby field on Saturday 22 February.

Gates open at 07:30 and the first game is expected to kick off at 08:30. The first 50 people to arrive will receive a free cooldrink.

Michelle Bosch, who organises the event along with Boland Women’s Rugby coach Thomas Chowles, says the aim of the event is to promote women’s rugby and also create awareness around the issue of the abuse of elderly people as well as domestic violence.

“A representative of Faircape, one of the event’s main sponsors along with Wildcat, will speak about elder abuse. Faircape will also have a gazebo where spectators can go for health screenings.

“Karen Lourens, the senior nursing services manager at Onrus Manor, will also speak about elder abuse while Captain Fadila September will speak about domestic abuse,” said Bosch.

Local sound technician James Peiser will provide the sound and Luca Hamman, a talented young singer from Hermanus, will sing the national anthems of South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe before the rugby action kicks off. Four u-18 women’s rugby sevens teams will also take to the field with their senior counterparts.

“Hamman Drones will be at the event to live stream all the action on Boland Women’s Rugby’s Facebook page,” said Bosch. “Karen Lourens and Gerna van der Riet, the unit manager at Onrus Manor, will do a draw next week that will also be live streamed. This draw will determine which teams play against each other.”

Spectators can also look forward to some lucky draws with awesome prizes up for grabs. The event will be followed by the prize giving at Hermanus Breweries at 19:00.

Bosch thanked Wildcat Inflatables, Faircape, African Bank, Greeff Christies Real Estate, BuildIt, Nails at Frinche and CMC Private Ambulance Service for their sponsorship.

“Thank you also to the local physiotherapists who have offered their services on the day of the event,” she added.

She also thanked Hermanus High’s principal Gregg Hassenkamp and the school’s sport organiser Liza Thorpe for allowing them the use of the high school rugby field for the second annual sevens rugby tournament.

Bosch invited anyone who wishes to become involved through sponsorships to contact her on 076 503 5637 or Thomas Chowles on 071 807 4835.
