Young cricketer coaching fresh new talent

Jared Wilson, a Hermanus High learner is starting his own exciting venture Z to start coaching other potential cricketers.

Jared, who hails from Cape Town but moved to Hermanus in his Grade 8 year (he is now in matric), has been playing cricket since the tender age of 6 years. “I have loved the game ever since,” the 18-year-old said.

He currently plays for Hermanus High’s u-19A cricket team, of which he is also the captain. What is striking about this young man is the fact that he has been playing in the u-19A team since he was in Grade 8.

Wilson is also currently in the 1st XI Cricket team at Hermanus Cricket Club, which participates in the Boland Premier League.

Recently, Jared signed up for the Cricket South Africa coaching course, which took place on 14 to 15 July at the Boland Park Cricket Stadium. “The reason I took the course is that I sustained a serious injury at the end of last year, which put me out of the game for a whole 13 months,” he related. “I still wanted to be involved in the game, and that is why I decided to enter.”

In the course Jared learnt new drills and skills, which enables him to coach and improve young, up-and-coming cricketers to better their game. “I want to inspire and teach other players what some of the best coaches have taught me,” he said.

“My long-term goal is obviously to play professional cricket. I want it to be my job. If you love what you do you won’t have to work a day in your life, and that is why I want to be involved in cricket for as long as I can.”

Jared also said his dream is to pursue his professional cricket career in the UK, where his mother was born.

He has an upcoming trial match with a provincial academy in Gauteng later this year. “I hope things go well for me,” he said. “I do not have a specific position in cricket, so luckily for me I am an all-rounder.” He is a seam bowler as well as a top/middle order batsman.

“I have already started coaching children around Hermanus, and would love to keep up with the coaching in future,” Jared said. “I help kids from age 8 to 17 years, whom I would love to see reach their full potential. I would love to see the Overberg produce more provincial players.”

Parents are welcome to contact Jared if they want cricket coaching lessons for their children. He uses top-class equipment and facilities.
