Young cyclists show that it can be done

A group of learners from Groenvlei High School showed the world that you don’t need to be a professional cyclist to cycle 450 kilometers and to make a change in the lives of people who are fighting cancer.

The 21 learners (12 girls and 9 boys) started cycling on 3 February in Suurbraak and finished their journey in Lansdowne in Cape Town on 8 February..

The main goal of this ride is to raise funds for Ari’s Cancer Foundation and the cyclists of Groenvlei High School, aim to raise R350 000.

The learners made a stop at Hyundai Hermanus on 7 February where they were spoiled with hotdogs and cooldrinks prior to taking on the route from Hermanus to Stellenbosch the next day.

Hyundai Hermanus supported the learners by providing them with a food truck that they could use to transport food and other goods needed on the journey.

Mark Ahjam, of Bilionetworks, the anchor sponsor of the event, says he was surprised when he saw these learners during a spinning class about six months ago. “These 21 learners are not professional cyclists, some of them have never ridden bicycles before. It is amazing that they get up every day and cycle to the next town during the heat and strong winds,” says Ahjam.

Godfrey Hendrickse, a teacher at Groenvlei High School and the project co-ordinator, explains that these learners are cycling from Suurbraak to Malgas to Bredasdorp, Elim, Hermanus, Stellenbosch before ending up again in Cape Town. “They are doing this to raise awareness around cancer and to try and raise the R350 000 in any way possible. If people want to donate money for the good cause they can send an SMS to 40553 that contains the word ‘CYCLE’. This will cost them R20,” says Hendrickse.

Delano Timm, a Grade 12 learner also taking part in the challenge, explains that the rewards outweigh the challenge of riding 450 kilometers. “We are privileged enough to encourage others by showing them that the world needs more leaders. Our aim is to promote a healthy lifestyle by riding and by collecting funds for Ari’s Cancer Foundation. This foundation focuses on adolescents and young adults in Africa who are fighting cancer,” says Timm.
