Consider these tips to ensure safe swimming this summer

The Provincial Search and Rescue team of the SAPS issued a series of tips for water safety over the holiday period.

  • This campaign was launched in Kimberley on Monday (25/11).

The team plans to visit schools and communities in and around the Northern Cape.

Community leaders and parents are urged to take extra safety precautions when swimming or participating in recreational water activities.

Parents are advised to keep the following tips in mind:

  • Supervision is not enough. parents need to educate children on the dangers of being in and around water.
  • When going near water, children must always be under elders’ supervision.
  • Never walk too close to the edge of canals, dams, rivers or swamps.
  • Empty paddling pools, bath tubs and water containers after use, as children might be enticed to play in the water.
  • Never jump into the water in an attempt to rescue someone if you don’t know how to swim.
