Experience Kalahari at festival

The annual Kalahari Desert Festival is taking place in the Kalahari area at Erin Farm near Askham.

It commenced on Wednesday (21/03) and ends on Saturday (24/03).

Hennie Swart is the organiser of this festival of the South African San Institute (Sasi), in close collaboration with the San Council of South Africa (SASC).

“The festival emphasises is on giving the local talent an opportunity to perform on stage with other known artists. Through this they become part of the festival, with the talent scout being a highlight of the fest.

“Visitors will experience local food competitions, children’s programmes, traditional games, a wired cars competition and all other demonstrations,” said Swart.

The Khomani Cultural Landscape was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) last year.

It is located at the border with Botswana and Namibia, coinciding with the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

The festival is proud to engage with the Khomani San Common Property Association (CPA) in celebrating this historical acknowledgement.

In agreement with the South African Science Council, the South African Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will be available to offer demonstrations, presentation and career advise to the future astronomers.

Collin Fortune, the chairperson of the Northern Cape Tourism Authority Board, welcomed the visitors to the Kalahari.

“We as the Northern Cape residents invite them to experience and discover the magic and lifestyle of one of Africa’s first people as it celebrates the culture of the Khomani San in their traditional setting amongst the iconic red dunes of the Kalahari Desert.

  • “We further encourage our visitors to engage with our locals and learn about their heritage, experience true Kalahari hospitality and enjoy local cuisine at the food stalls serving home-baked favourites like roosterkoek, potbrood and other slow foods of the Kalahari,” Fortune said.
