Mine committed to enhancing trust

Kumba Iron Ore’s Kolomela mine confirmed its commitment to maintaining a sound relationship with its host communities at its recent Stakeholder Day.

The mine has invited the community to raise compliments and concerns anonymously and confidentially.

“We want to enhance trust in our communities by operating and communicating in an open and transparent way. Therefore we want to encourage you to talk to us and to respectfully challenge behaviour that is in conflict with our values,” said George Benjamin, manager Corporate Affairs at Kolomela mine.

To ensure this transparency the mine once again reiterates its existing channels and processes in place to allow stakeholders to talk to them.

The community can send their suggestions, compliments and complaints to the mine. There are two well-established methods – a complaint form and the YourVoice electronic system.

Complaint form: The community may fill out a complaint form at the mine’s Public Affairs Office from 08:00 to 16:00 at 21 Main Street, Postmasburg.

Once reported, it is logged on the mine’s reporting system, Tirisano. This notification is then channelled to the person who will address it. You will be contacted if more information is needed. The mine will aim to resolve all notifications as soon as possible. If the matter cannot be resolved, you will be requested to escalate it to the YourVoice system.

YourVoice is a new Anglo American reporting platform which has replaced the Speak Up platform. YourVoice can be accessed at the Public Affairs Office and other electronic channels including the website www.yourvoice.angloamerican.com and on 087-232-5426.

The benefits of the electronic system includes:

  • It ensures anonymous reporting;
  • It provides regular updates from start to finish;
  • Its comprehensive reporting ensures that outcomes are monitored and visible;
  • Data-driven insights help the mine to detect issues early and address them appropriately;
  • YourVoice is an effective process with greater focus on inclusiveness.

If no evidence of wrongdoing is found, the reporting party will be informed and the investigation will be closed. However, the investigation could be re-opened if further information becomes available.

Confidentiality

Kolomela mine recognises the need for anonymity and confidentiality and that people may be discouraged from reporting complaints due to possible negative consequences.

“We have modernised our programme and enhanced our technology to better protect anonymity and personal information. We want our community members to trust the system, which was designed to support you throughout the process,” said George.

For more information about the process you can contact Martha Koloi at 053-313-9157 or Martha.koloi@angloamerican.com.
