School makes history

The debating team of the Wrenchville High School competed in the Northern Cape final round of the national school debating competition of the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (Saasta), held from 24 to 26 August.

Wrenchville became the first non-Kimberley school to win the provincial leg of the competition. The team will represent the province at the national finals in Pretoria from 1 to 3 October.

The national champions will win a weeklong trip to the USA.

The Saasta National Schools Debates Competition is one of the flagship projects that provides learners with an opportunity to develop their research, critical thinking and information literacy skills, as well as their ability to work as a team to present logical arguments.

Among the objectives is to make science communication ambassadors out of learners, through researching and the debating of high-level scientific topics.
