Youth mentors learn to lead

Two hundred school learners from across the Northern Cape took part in the eighth annual national youth camp.

Berenice Sinxeve, MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, encouraged the learners at the camp to grab the opportunities presented to them to learn and acquire new skills.

Neo Balepile, a participant from Kuruman, said this was the first time he had ever left his hometown and he could not wait to make new friends.

The provincial camp took place at the Warrenton Resort in the Frances Baard District from 1 to 6 December.

It was hosted with the theme “One Heart One Africa”.

The 2019 Youth Camp attracted participants who were doing gr. 11 during the 2019 academic year.

The group went through a stringent recruitment and selection process which was verified by the National Department of Sport and Recreation.

The Youth Camp motto “Learn, Lead and Serve” captures the essence of its focus, which is to nurture the spirit of social cohesion and nation building and provide young South Africans with leadership and life skills, as well as with values that will help them develop into proud and patriotic leader citizens.

The camp lasted seven days. One day was set aside for community service, where trailblazers visited impoverished communities in the vicinity of the camp to do community work.

The teams did minor repairs to identified Early Childhood Development Centers (ECDs) around Warrenton.

A number of alumni from last year’s camps also attended, but this time they assumed the role of camp stewards.
