Komani resident celebrates 100th birthday

JEAN Armstrong, a resident at Madeira Home in Komani, will celebrate her 100th birthday today, Thursday, October 22.

She was born on October 22, 1920, in the ERPM Mining community on the East Rand in Gauteng.

Jean’s parents were David and Bessie Fyfe and she was the youngest of three daughters.

She met her husband, Edward Armstrong, on the beach in Margate and spent her married life in Germiston.

They were married for 59 years and had two sons, Keith and Leigh.

The couple later retired to Margate, where they originally met.

Jean and her husband moved to Madeira Home as residents on September 1, 1998.

This makes Jean not only the oldest of the approximately 100 residents, but also the resident who has been there the longest.

Keith’s wife, Charmain Armstrong, said, “Jean was an extremely capable housewife. She was keen on sewing, knitting, and crocheting, and was always preparing fabulous meals for her family and friends.”

Lillias Fuller, of Madeira Home, said, “Here at Madeira, we call her the Sunshine Lady. Despite being paralysed down the right side and having to lie in bed for many years, she never complains and always has a smile on her face.”

Charmain said they were happy with how Jean was treated at Madeira, saying, “She is very well taken care of, and it means a lot to us as a family to know that our mom, a caring, spontaneous and fun-loving person, is in such a friendly, caring and nurturing environment.”

Komani-Karoo Express wishes Jean a happy birthday and good health for the year to come.
