Komani Veterans win friendly netball tournament

EXPERIENCE overcame youth as a team of veteran players emerged victorious when five local netball teams from Komani played in a friendly tournament, which took place on two netball courts at Man’s Pub and Braai on Sunday afternoon.

The five teams which took part were Walter Sisulu University’s first and second teams, Sibabalwe NT, Inkwenkwezi NT and Komani Veterans.

Tournament organiser, Siyasanga Mselana, said the tournament was held to encourage the local netball teams to get involved and keep their players active.

“The reason we had this tournament was to encourage the youth to be active in sport, promote discipline and most important bring the community together to keep our netball players active,” she said.

“There are a lot of drug dealers roaming the streets and if we can keep young people away from those and keep them here, then we will uplift this community through sport.”

The first game saw the WSU second team defeat Sibabalwe 5-3 in a close game.

WSU’s first team then fought hard as they lost 15-10 to the talented Inkwenkwezi side.

Inkwenkwezi went on to meet Sibabalwe in the semi-finals and hammered them 18-1 to book a final meeting with Komani Veterans.

In the final, Komani Veterans showed character and experience winning the game 15-13 to win the tournament.

Mselana thanked the teams for taking part in the tournament.

“Well done to all the players who took part in this tournament, as they all played so well with determination.

“All teams represented their badges well with good sporting conduct and we can see that teams really want to improve in the game,” said Mselana
