Middelburg residents can help with potholes

A PROJECT to start filling potholes in streets which are popular with tourists in Middelburg will kick off tomorrow (Friday, January 24).

A donation of 400 bags of tar by the Middelburg Tourism Committee and the Ratepayers and Business Forum marks the start in residents’ efforts and commitment to improve the dilapidated road infrastructure.

“Unfortunately, Inxuba Yethemba Municipality (IYM) does not have the funds to reseal Church and Jubilee Streets, nor is the road their responsibility, since these streets form part of the R56 provincial road,” says IYM councillor Handri Vorster.

“We are constantly putting pressure on the province to start the project, and according to the latest correspondence, work will hopefully commence by September.

“Church and Jubilee streets are in a shocking state, to say the least, and our only current solution is to continue by filling the potholes with ‘sabunga’ from the municipal quarry,” Vorster said.

Residents who would like to assist with the project by filling the potholes in their respective streets, are urged to liaise with Dean Williams at technical services in New Street, Middelburg.
