Old Collegians cancel preseason friendlies

KOMANI-BASED rugby club Old Collegians RFC has cancelled their last three of the traditional annual preseason friendlies matches because of the coronavirus crisis.

There were five planned preseason friendlies for the side and they only played two games against one of the oldest rugby clubs in the region, Flamingo from Ezibeleni and a visiting team from Adelaide, Wild Boys.

They won both matches, beating Flamingo 31-19, while narrowly winning 19-17 against Adelaide side.

Both games were played at the Tobi Kula Indoor Sports Centre in Komani.

Club chairperson Maxwell Levine said, “We had a clear preseason program with matches against Hibernians (Burgersdorp), Shining Stars and EUR Africans (Aliwal North).

“These friendlies were cancelled, but it is a clear indication as how seriously we take our preparation for the upcoming season.”

The side has struggled in recent years and no longer takes part in the Border Premier League after being relegated last season. The rugby side was preparing for their season in the Sub Union First Division to start next month.

“Our mission and mandate is clear, we want to win all our matches and qualify for the play-offs and, from there, gain promotion back to the Border Premier League,” said Levine.

“The break will definitely affect our form, but remember we are all affected by this. So mentally and physically we have to find a way of hitting the ground running.

“But first priority now is the health and safety of every player. Rugby is secondary to that as a person’s life has more value,” said Levine.

The Chris Hani District had three rugby teams that were playing in the Border Rugby Leagues, but after Old Collegians were relegate, the district was left with two teams, Shining Stars and Breakers, competing in the Border Premier League and Border Super League respectively.
