‘Stay fit for when season reopens’

THE former Chris Hani District Soccer U19 captain, who now plays for ABC Motsepe League side Amavarara FC, Athenkosi Lafota, says it is important for players to keep up their fitness levels during the national lockdown.

Soccer players around the country have been training on their own since President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the state of disaster last week and will continue to do so in the 21 days of the national lockdown.

Lafota has been a pillar of strength in the Amavarara team, playing a vital part in their great form in the Nedbank Cup and the league this season.

The 21-year-old winger also won the man of the match award in their last 32 Nedbank Cup win against Free State’s Super Eagles FC in East London.

Lafota has urged players in the ABC Motsepe League and the SAB Regional League to stick to their training indoor programmes during the 21-day lockdown to stay fit and healthy.

An issue of ill-discipline in the ABC Motsepe League is still a big problem, with coaches regularly dealing with alcohol abuse and other off-field worries.

We all know this is not a normal situation we are in at the moment‚ so I am expecting players to take full responsibility and look after themselves.

“They must stay fit and be ready to return to action when it is decided the league is going to resume‚” said the Molteno-born player.

Amavarara are currently in sixth place on the log with 35 points - 12 points behind log leaders Bizana Pondo Chiefs - and have a game in hand.

The Chris Hani District-based side was last in action on March 14, when they beat Mthatha Bucks 4-1 in the league here in Komani. ‘Varara’ would have faced Highbury FC three days later, but SAFA EC then announced the suspension of all football games in the province.
