Hankey sport teams benefit from ward development fund

TWO grandstands that belong to the Hankey Sports Ground have been repaired and refurbished.

The community of Hankey benefited from funding from the Ward Development Fund as two of their seven grandstands were repaired and refurbished at a total cost of R28 500.

“What better way is there to unite a community and keep its youth out of trouble than sport,” said Ward 9 Councillor, Sibongiseni Jujwana.

He said sport is a great part of Ward 9 and surrounding Wards that are affiliated with clubs based in Hankey.

A total of nine football clubs exist, which include a team of “golden oldies”, the Hankey Masters FC, two rugby teams and four netball teams which are born, bred and seasoned in Ward 9.

The Hankey Sports Ground has become a second home to many sport loving youth. Some which are active participants and others who are just sideline coaches and aspiring referees.

“Some of the objectives of the Ward Development Fund are to promote community relationships, promote community development initiatives and support ward-based organisations, among enhancing the potential within the ward”, said Community Services Portfolio Councillor, Daniel Benson.

“It therefore becomes mandatory to support a plea from a community with so much potential and love of sport,” he said.

Jujwana is an active part of sport development in Hankey.

He plays for the Hankey Masters Football Club but is also an active coach and mentor to the boys and girls of Hankey.

Jujwana said that the refurbishment of the grandstands may seem like a small gesture but to the players and spectators it means a lot as they create a sense of law and order but importantly proper seating arrangements while the game is watched.

One important game that he highlights and where the grandstands will be used as their full capacity is a tournament that will be on November 28 at the Hankey Sports Grounds.
