SPAR Eastern Cape and dairy processor, Woodlands Dairy, recently joined forces to supply sanitary towels to young women and raise awareness around female health and gender-based violence.

Sponsorship and events manager at SPAR Eastern Cape, Alan Stapleton, said that they ran a very successful campaign in October 2020, when they donated one pack of sanitary towels for every pack of SPAR Petals purchased by consumers.

“This year, SPAR is donating sanitary towels worth more than R1 million to female-orientated organisations,” he said.

In the Eastern Cape, 21 120 packs of SPAR Petals SANPRO sanitary towels will be distributed through Masimanyane in East London, Sinethemba Youth Development in Knysna, Khazimla in Port Elizabeth and On Eagle’s Wings in Jeffreys Bay.

Woodlands Dairy, which is actively involved in community upliftment, will facilitate and support On Eagle’s Wings with their distributions.

CSI and marketing coordinator at Woodlands Dairy, Carmelia Miles, added that they had devised a campaign which will run from February to December 2021 in Hankey, Patensie, Loerie, Thornhill, Humansdorp, Jeffreys Bay, Oyster Bay, Kareedouw and the surrounding areas.

“By visiting schools and running workshops around female health and hygiene, puberty, stigma and confidence, we hope to dispel myths attached to menstruation.

“We want these young ladies entering womanhood to know that what they are experiencing is natural and should be embraced as a rite of passage. A total of 5 280 packs of sanitary towels will be donated in these areas,” she said.

“What SPAR is doing for the communities around South Africa is admirable and will change many young women’s lives in a positive way,” she concluded.
