J’Bay ward councillor keeps elderly mobile

A Jeffreys Bay councillor is helping to look after the frail and elderly in his ward.

Ludwig Vorster, the ward councillor for ward 8, last week delivered six new wheelchairs to the Amala Nursing Home.

The wheelchairs were bought through Kouga Municipality’s Ward Development Fund (WDF).

Amala Matron, Estelle Botha, said the wheelchairs were heaven sent and would go a long way towards ensuring quality care for those who live at the nursing home. “It feels as if Christmas has come early this year. We are very grateful for the donation,” she said.

Vorster said the aluminium-frame wheelchairs were both light and strong, with a weight capacity of up to 110kg.

“Nursing homes are very expensive to run. Amala has always tried to keep their running costs as low as possible without compromising on the quality of care offered,” he said.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has also placed an extra strain on them, with additional measures having to be put in place to help keep their residents safe. I hope that this donation will strengthen their efforts to provide professional but affordable care to those who have entered their golden years.”

Botha said Amala was currently home to 43 elderly residents. The facility offers self-care housing, as well as a frail care centre and specialised unit for patients suffering from dementia.

Other projects that have been completed for ward 8 through the Ward Development Fund include new street name boards and speed humps.
