KwaNomzamo Community Hall gets second chance

THE KwaNomzamo Community Hall has been given a second chance to serve the communities of Wards 6, 12 and 15.

On Sunday, November 8, the KwaNomzamo Community Hall was officially re-opened and handed back to the community by the Executive Mayor, Councillor Horatio Hendricks, and Community Services Portfolio Councillor, Councillor Daniel Benson.

Almost R1.5 million worth of repairs has been done to the structure and new furniture has been bought in order for it to be restored to a community facility again.

The hall and the Old Age Home office were torched and badly damaged on March 6, 2018, allegedly by a group of service delivery protestors. The fire caused severe structural damage to the ceiling, walls, stage and floor, which meant that the hall could no longer be used by the community. All the windows had been broken by the angry mob.

The Executive Mayor said, “It is critical that the KwaNomzamo Hall is re-opened as it served the elderly in hosting other important social and religious gatherings that would not be possible in someone’s backyard.”

The refurbishment to the hall was a year-long team effort by Community Services officials led by Frank Tamboer and local SMMEs and businesses within the Kouga area who assisted in fencing, tiling and repainting the hall.

The Mayor urged the community to not resort to damaging state property when they are dismayed and dissatisfied but to rather engage in round-table engagements with community leaders where solutions can be tabled.
