‘Plastic’ road up for award

THE DA in the Eastern Cape has secured a top spot at the prestigious 2020 Eco-Logic Awards.

Shortlisted in both the Innovation and Eco-build award categories, the municipality will compete respectively against the University of Pretoria and Wilderness Foundation Africa, as well as Boxa Loo and USE-IT in the Eco-build category.

The project?

A 300m strip of road in Woltemade Street in Jeffreys Bay, which has been relayered with plastic-infused tar – Africa’s first eco-friendly road.

The road includes about 700kg of recycled plastic.

The plastic was turned into pellets using a special formula and then added to the asphalt mix used for the top layer of the road.

“The plastic pellets replace a portion of the bitumen, thereby minimising harm to the atmosphere,” said Kouga Executive Mayor, Horation Hendricks. “The result is a road that is more durable and also friendlier to the environment.”

“Kouga Municipality is proud to have been involved in this groundbreaking project. We strongly believe that innovation is key to improving basic service delivery to all our communities. What makes this particular project all the more special, are the potential benefits to the environment and our oceans.”

Hosted by Enviropaedia across twelve categories, the annual event aims at identifying individuals, organisations and communities that positively contribute to a sustainable world.

The virtual award ceremony will take place on Monday, September 21. Initially set to take place on Friday, June 5, the event was delayed as a result of the COVID-19 pande-mic.

“We will not let COVID-19 prevent us from celebrating and promoting our Eco-Champions,” says David Parry-Davies, Director of Enviropaedia and The Eco-Logic Awards.

“It is now more important than ever to share good news, empower people and communities and support green businesses.”
