ALTHOUGH boasting an above average pass rate, several schools in the Kouga and KouKamma region failed to obtain a 100% pass rate during the 2019 Grade 12 examinations.

McLachlan High School in Joubertina achieved a 95% pass rate, with 17 of the 19 learners that wrote the matric exam to passing.

Kyla Kennedy, the top matric achiever, secured four distinctions.

Principal Stan Pienaar said, “Even though the learners performed very well overall, we were expecting a 100% pass rate based on previous years’ pass rate of 100%.

The two learners who failed, will rewrite in June this year.

According to Pienaar, the learners will be able to attend school and will receive additional tutoring.

Paul Sauer High School in Kareedouw secured an 87.5% pass rate – with 28 of the 32 candidates passing.

Liyema Yake, the school’s top matric performer, received two distinctions.

Principal Olive du Plessis says, “We are satisfied with how well each learner did in terms of the marks they obtained.

“Overall, the examination papers were fair. However, the Afrikaans paper seemed to be a problem. Three of the four learners that failed, did not pass Afrikaans.”

All three matric learners at CVO Omega Akademie in Kareedouw passed their matric examination with a Bachelor’s Degree.

Herman Stapelberg received four distinctions, while Juan du Plessis received three distinctions. Du Plessis furthermore won two awards: the Best Performer in Geography and the Best Performer in Physical Science.

“We are extremely proud of these learners. They did our school proud,” says Principal Ronel Stapelberg.

Humansdorp Senior Secondary School acquired a 76.6% matric pass rate.

Principal Shaun Felix says, “I am proud of what we have achieved. We are confident that we will go over 80% this year.”
