Top athletes to battle it out next month

ONE day, epic challenges, tough routes and raw adventure . . .

Top athletes and rookie-racers from across South Africa are set to put their mettle to the test at the gruelling 120km Expedition Africa adventure race next month – putting their endurance to the ultimate test.

Presented by Kinetic Events, the race – consisting of a 120km and 60km route – will leave the starting blocks at Cape St Francis Resort on Saturday, November 7.

It is expected that teams will reach the finish line at the resort from lunch time.

“After several requests a 60km route has been included in this adventure weekend,” says Race Director, Heidi Muller. “The shorter distance will give beginners, school teams and parent/ child combinations an opportunity to try out adventure racing. We feel that it is of utmost importance to make the sport accessible to the new generation and other outdoor lovers.”

The unique 120km route will see contestants cover 30km on foot, mountain biking for 80km and kayaking for 12km.

Top teams are expected to cross the finish line in 12 hours, with the last team in before 24 hours.

The 60km route will cover approximately 18km on foot divided up into two legs, 25km of mountain biking and a 12km kayak.

Top athletes are expected to cross the finish line within six hours after leaving the starting blocks, while the back teams will take up to 12 hours.

“It was a challenging six months for us like so many other South Africans during lockdown, and our hearts go out to so many of our friends and family who lost their jobs and suffered financially,” says Stephan Muller, Race Director. “So many businesses in the sporting and tourism industry were impacted by COVID-19, and we can only hope for and wish them all the best for the future.

“This will be our first event in the region after COVID-19, and we believe that adventurers once again want to go out and explore. We love nature, travel and to explore.”

According to Muller, Cape St Francis Resort is a perfect venue for the teams. “Families can enjoy the beautiful resort, while they support their teams,” she says.

“The surrounding area is perfect for adventure racing: it is beautiful, rugged, safe, and the community and local farmers are always supportive of our dream.”
