Wavecrest Watch to tackle crime spike

WHEN there is trouble in the neighbourhood, whom do you call?

The Wavecrest Watch – established on Tuesday, October 6, in a bid to effectively curb the alarming increase in crime in the area.

Newly elected chairman and the driving force behind the group, Sarel Breytenbach, says “Due to the recent spike in crime in the area, especially house break-ins and theft from vehicles, I have decided to start the Wavecrest Watch.”

This follows the previous Wavecrest Neighbourhood Watch which was dissolved in 2016.

“Last week Friday, six crimes were committed within three hours, as well as an attempted hijacking earlier the week,” he says. “Hot spot areas include Combretum Road, Pride of India Crescent, Parasol Street, Sage Avenue and Syringa Avenue – all areas where some of the street lights are not working.

“Residents need to be safe.”

According to Breytenbach, they will patrol the Wavecrest-area on a regular basis – and pass on any information to the police and security firms.

“Residents need to be the eyes and ears of the police on the ground,” he says. “Anyone is welcome to help patrol the streets.”

The organisation have partnered with the Jeffreys Bay Police Station, Kouga Municipality, and private security firms in their fight against crime. They also work closely with the Wavecrest Blockwatch and C-Place Neighbourhood Watch.
