Citizens up in arms

The contradicting decisions continuously being made by various government departments regarding regulations to curb the Covid-19 pandemic, often causes confusion for South African citizens.

One example of this is the tweet by government on Wednesday (22/07) on its official Twitter page, which is expected to give reliable information, about a total ban on alcohol and cigarettes until after lockdown.

This controversial tweet had the whole country buzzing.

On the same day, restaurant owners and employees across South Africa tried to make their voice heard about the predicament in which the industry currently finds itself.

Not only does the curfew that is enforced daily from 21:00 harm the industry, but the ban on serving alcoholic beverages in restaurants also wreaks havoc.

Thousands of workers in the tobacco, liquor and restaurant industries are facing unemployment due to this decision.

Several experts believe that these measures and regulations regarding the Covid-19 pandemic are only a smokescreen by government to try to divert people’s attention from the real problems.

These issues include the fact that, with the sharp increase in Covid-19 cases, the shortage in the number of hospital beds is truely alarming.
