Fraud by ‘healers’ exposed

Three suspects have been taken into custody for allegedly committing fraud in Kroonstad, costing victims R49 750. A fourth suspect is still on the run.

Majovu Omar (39), Shaffiq Mugerwa (40) and Daniel Byansi (42), all Ugandan nationals, appeared in the Kroonstad Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 15 June, on charges of fraud.

It is alleged that the suspects pretended to be traditional healers, claiming to provide clients with good fortune, protection and healing from illness.

They promised to help victims gain money and prosperity, and encouraged victims to resign from their work and deposit all their pension money into these bogus healers’ accounts so that their money could multiply.

Trading as Dr Suna, the suspects consulted with clients at a muti-shop in Murray Street, Kroonstad.

The police in Kroonstad request the community to assist them in tracing the fourth suspect, who calls herself Betty, Beauty or Susan.

Anyone who might have been a victim is asked to call Capt. Sello Mokhele on 073-571-5566 or the hotline on 086-001-0111, or make use of the My SAPS application.

The suspects remain in custody.
