Hospital secured

Grave concern is being expressed after ten staff members of the Boitumelo Hospital in Kroonstad tested positive for Covid-19.

This includes two doctors, five nurses, an administrative worker and two support staff members.

The Free State Department of Health confirmed this on Tuesday (16/06).

According to Mondli Mvambi, spokesperson, the infected employees are in self-isolation, all their contacts have been instructed to self-isolate and the affected areas at the hospital have been disinfected without closing the entire hospital.

Workers at the hospital expressed their grievances through a protest action on Wednesday (17/06).

They demanded that the entire hospital must be shut down and the remaining staff be tested for the virus.

The staff fear that many more positive cases will be uncovered when they all are tested.

Last week Montseng Tsiu, Free State MEC for Health, Dr David Motau, head of the department, and senior management had an extensive briefing session with unions about plans being implemented by the department to prevent the situation from getting out of hand.

The department made a commitment that there would be further briefings with other staff and careful monitoring of the environment to ensure that no patients and members of the public get infected.

By Sunday (21/06), the Covid-19 statistics for the Free State were: 728 confirmed cases, 294 recoveries and 12 deaths.

Also, 33 positive cases in the Moqhaka district have been confirmed by the Department of Health.

The department continues to screen people in the province and to trace and track people who might have been in contact with positive cases.

“Currently all positive cases in the Moqhaka area is in self-isolation or will be hospitalised. Should the Moqhaka area need an isolation facility, we have identified Kroonpark,” says Dika Kheswa, spokesperson of the Moqhaka Municipality.
