Kids taught to fend off abuse

Matla A Bana is an organisation that works in partnership with the South-African Police Service (SAPS) in an effort to improve the services rendered to the victims of abuse.

Its main objective is to improve the rooms and facilities at Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) centres.

In so doing, the organisation hopes to create a safer and more comfortable environment for children who have been abused.

On Thursday, 28 February, representatives of the organisation, together with members of the Kroonstad FCS and social crime prevention, visited the Voorwaarts Primary School in Kroonstad. Learners from Gr. 3 to Gr. 5 attended the session.

Monique Strydom, chief executive officer (CEO) of Matla A Bana, gave a presentation on how learners can protect themselves from strangers.

She also told them not to accept gifts from strangers, because they could try to lure them into their vehicles. She said that this was how many rape and abuse cases started.or unknown places where they can be raped and abused.

The Kroonstad FCS provided safety tips on how children could protect themselves to avoid being raped.

Learners were also addressed about issues relating to bullying and the different types of bullying at schools.

They were encouraged to inform their teachers and parents if they experience bullying.

Each of the learners also received a survivor guide booklet to assist them.

Matla A Bana is on a nationwide tour to visit schools. The last stop will be in Cape Town on Sunday (10/03).
