Man jumps to his death

On Tuesday, 16 October, at about 11:40, a motorist and his passenger crossed the Alexandria Bridge, better known as the robot bridge, in Kroonstad.

The motorist and the passenger saw an African male who, in front of their eyes, jumped of the bridge into the Valsch River.

According to Capt. Stephan Thakeng, police spokesperson, the motorist parked the vehicle on the other side of the river to see whether the man, who has jumped of the bridge, could swim.

“The body of the man never appeared to the surface and it was clear that he drowned. The police were called and a search was instantly initiated,” Thakeng told Kroon News.

The body was retrieved from the river at about 15:00.

Thakeng said that an Okapi knife and a cellphone was found in the deceased’s pocket.

A preliminary investigation was conducted and the relatives was traced.

The deceased is Morena Button Mateba, born in 1988, who resided in Gelukwaarts, Maokeng.

  • Thakeng said that a inquest case has been registered and a post mortem conducted. In another incident, a woman residing in Panorama, Kroonstad, was found hanging on a vine trellis next to a kitchen entrance on Tuesday (23/10).

According to Thakeng the boyfriend of the deceased found her hanging on the vine trellis.

“The boyfriend managed to cut the rope and phoned the mother of the deceased. The police was informed and the body of the woman was found with the rope still tied around her neck,” Thakeng said.

Thakeng said that the police suspect no foul play. A post mortem will be conducted at the Sasolburg State mortuary soon.

The name of the woman was not released by the police at the time of going to press.
