A Moqhaka council meeting was badly disrupted on Wednesday (30/01).
This came after investors and members of Moqhaka for the People (MFTP) had been invited to the meeting by the speaker, Mpho Chakane. The guests were stopped in their tracks when some councillors stood up and left the meeting.
The visitors would have given a complete presentation to the council about the enormous power station project they want to establish in Kroonstad. The project is envisioned to have a positive impact on the community and the economy.
Several members of the mayoral committee (MMCs) left the meeting, reasoning that the correct channels and procedures for the investors to invest in Moqhaka had not been followed.
The speaker then referred the investors and members of MFTP, who some had travelled far to attend the meeting, back to portfolios.
The investors and the MFTP were supposed to give a presentation about the “$10 billion upgrade of the Kroonstad Power Station” as previously mentioned by Mncedisi Mqwathi, municipal manager (reported on in Kroon News of 29 January), and also confirm when the project would be launched.
The project, which promises job creation for unemployed residents, is expected to boost Moqhaka’s and the surrounding area’s economy.
“The Moqhaka Municipality is already struggling to meet and honour its payback arrangement with Eskom, which can lead to a total power cut,” says Cllr. David Mzunga.
“Now some councillors show possible investors, who will make an investment for a new power station and create jobs, the door.”
It also appears that some of the councillors are slightly sceptical about the project.
Apparently a presentation on the project will be presented again once all the correct channels have been followed.
Kroonnuus
is still waiting for the Moqhaka Municipality to give feedback on the current situation, and also to confirm when the next meeting with the possible investors will take place.
