Report pipe bursts

As of the end of May, the provincial average water storage was at 88,4%, which is a slight drop when compared to last year’s level of 96,1%.

“The winter season is a time when pipe bursts can be anticipated in our homes as well as in the main pipe lines.

“The department appeals to communities to fix leaks and burst pipes in and around their homes,” says Larry Crisp, communications manager of the Free State Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS).

The DWS weekly measures dam levels across the country in order to make informed decisions when it comes to the distribution of water to relevant dams for consumption by communities, says Crisp.

The Kalkfontein Dam is currently at 30,6%, Sterkfontein at 93,3%, the Gariep Dam at 99,3% and the Krugersdrift Dam at 99,7%.

The Groothoek Dam is at 40,0% and the Rustfontein Dam at a low of 37,0%.

“The DWS appeals to communities to always take care of water resources and report any vandalism.

“Pipe bursts from the main line should be reported to the local municipality,” says Crisp.

“Always use water sparingly,” he says.
