Residents receive sites

The Moqhaka Local Municipality under the leadership of Executive Mayor Tshidi Koloi finally allocated 605 residential sites to residents of Matlwangtlwang near Steynsrus.

“The last time sites were allocated in this area was in 1996,” Koloi said.

“This is a milestone achievement during her term of office, as this issue has been a thorn to both the leadership of the municipality and the residents who have been struggling for more than 20 years without residential sites.

“Some of the recipients of the sites said they are happy that their human dignity is now restored,” Dika Kheswa, municipal spokesperson, said.

Koloi said they have prioritised the issue of land across Moqhaka, where more than 500 sites and 241 title deeds have also been allocated in Rammulotsi (see article hereby) and the next stop will be Maokeng and Kroonstad.

The following areas need bulk infrastructure as to speed up the backlog of sites allocation in Moqhaka: Kroonstad (Maokeng) 6 574, Viljoenskroon (Rammulotsi) 5 285 and Steynsrus (Matlwangtlwang) 1 436.

Business plans are at an advanced stage, with the national Department of Water and Sanitation and the provincial Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs to assist in solving this problem, Koloi said.

There are currently about 19 000 applicants.

“We agree that the struggle of our people around the issue of land is genuine, and needs urgent attention. The land audit that seeks to determine how much land and properties the municipality have, and for what purpose, is currently in progress.

“It will later be followed by the land summit, where residents, businesses, professionals and non governmental organisations will have to give input on the outcomes of the audit. We are determined to champion the interests of our masses and intensify their voices in the government,” Koloi concluded.
