Students excel

A group of eight students of the Kroonstad Black Belt Academy participated in the Free State District Tournament of the American Taekwondo Association (Always Take Action) South Africa (ATA-SA), held in Bloemfontein on 21 April.

Students performed very well in which was, for some, their first district ATA-SA tournament, said Sahbum-nim Morné England. The youngest competitor from Kroonstad was six years old and participated in the ATA Tigers divisions.

Students competed in traditional forms, traditional weapons, sparring, combat weapons and XMA weapons.

Students of the Kroonstad Black Belt Academy obtained 18 medals: 5 gold, 12 silver and 1 bronze.

The students who participated are:

  • ATA Tigers divisions: Edri van Wyk.
  • Colour belt divisions: Christo de Rebeira, Chris van Dalen, Etienne van Wyk, Adian van Wyk and Nathan van den Berg.
  • Black belt divisions: Sahbum-nim England and Ethan Klaassens.

Taekwondo is a Korean form of martial arts. It focuses on self defence, as well as teaching children life skills. Contrary to popular belief, martial arts do not make kids violent; it has completely the opposite effect.

“We teach kids about respect, loyalty, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, mastership, humility, gratitude, vision, knowledge, nobility and honor, which assists kids in everyday living, at school and in personal life,” said England.

People who are interested in joining the sport can visit the Kroonstad Black Belt Academy at the SANDF Sports Complex in Marais Street on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 17:30 to 19:30, or contact Sahbum-nim England on 082-928-3583.
