Swimmer makes waves

Barbara Fraatz, a masters swimmer from Kroonstad and a member of the Coelacanth Masters Swimming Club in Pretoria, took part in the 35th Nationals Masters Swimming Championship.

This event was held at the Newton Park pool in Port Elizabeth from 20 to 23 March.

She participated in the age group for women 50 to 54, and won a total of 11 medals.

Fraatz won a gold medal in both the 200 m individual medley and the 100 m backstroke, a silver medal in the 50 m butterfly stroke, 100 m freestyle and 50 m freestyle, a bronze medal in the 50 m backstroke and a fourth place in the women’s 50 m dash.

In her relay items with the Coelacanth team, she won a silver medal in the 4 x 50 m freestyle relay, and a bronze medal in the mixed 4 x 50 m medley relay, the mixed 4 x 50 m freestyle relay and the women’s 4 x 50 m medley relay.

In the Open Water Swim that took place at the Marina Martinique in Jeffreys Bay on 20 March, Barbara won a gold medal in the 1 000 m swim.
