Youth event successful

The Kroonstad Field Band Foundation held a successful event on 16 June in commemoration of the 16 June 1976 Sharpeville massacre.

The Kroonstad Field Band Foundation was established in 2016.

The foundation is an after-school program which tries to keep the youth away from unfruitful practices such as gangs, alcohol, drug abuse and crime.

It believes in holistic development, targeting various economic and social challenges and issues the youth of today must face.

“The idea is the development of our youth through music, dance and life skills,” says Teboho Matshaya, project officer of the foundation.

“We have activities with different topics for discussion, for example HIV/Aids, general life choices, teenage pregnancy, LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) and alcohol and substance abuse.”

The foundation also includes members with learning disabilities.

They practise four times a week – on Mondays and Wednesdays they rehearse at the Johan Slabbert School and on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Phomolong Primary School.

Currently they have 250 members of different age groups that includes learners from primary, high and special schools.

All members of the youth are invited to join the foundation for free.

Tutors are teaching members brass and pit instruments, dance and percussion, and they have a band coordinator who combines all these sections.

They perform at events, like the Boitumelo Reginal Hospital when mobile clinics were handed over by the Ponahalo De Beers Group.

For more information call Teboho Matshaya, project officer, on 063-296-4454 or 071-943-5939.
