Battle commemorated

Join Steve Lunderstedt, historian and writer, on Sunday (15/12) at 10:00 for a talk on the Battle of Magersfontein at the Magersfontein open-air auditorium.

This battle was fought 120 years ago, on 11 December 1899 during the Anglo Boer War. It was one of three major British defeats during a disastrous week, dubbed Black Week, from 10 to 17 December 1899.

The British Army suffered three devastating defeats at the battles of Stormberg, Magersfontein and Colenso, with a total of 2 776 men killed, wounded and captured.

From the auditorium one has a clear view of the battlefield, with the trenches still visible.

Although the talk by Lunderstedt is free, visitors will have to pay R25 per person for entrance to the battlefield and museum. After the talk, the museum can be visited.

Lunderstedt’s latest book, The Road to Magersfontein, will be for sale.

  • At the Magersfontein Battlefield restaurant on the premises, light meals can be ordered, or a three-course meal (to be booked in advance) can be enjoyed. The restaurant is open every day from 08:00 to 16:00. Dial 053-833-7115 for information.
