Children get chance to thrive

A total of 48 children from Sol Plaatje and Dikgatlong received prescription spectacles before settling in to watch a new Ster-Kinekor release with lunch, popcorn and a slush drink at Kimberley’s North Cape Mall on 6 May.

A hundred more learners from the Northern Cape will also receive tailor-made eyewear, following testing, thanks to Ster-Kinekor’s Vision Mission initiative, in partnership with the Department of Health and the Department of Education.

Launched by Ster-Kinekor in 2005, Vision Mission is dedicated to eradicating avoidable blindness by providing free optometric testing and treatment to learners in disadvantaged areas.

According to Geraldine Engelman, head of corporate social investment (CSI) at Ster-Kinekor, money was raised with support from movie-goers who choose to add a donation of R2,50 when buying film tickets.

Since the project’s founding in 2005, Vision Mission has screened viewings for over 329 592 disadvantaged learners; provided spectacles to more than 14 798, and restored sight to a young man who was blind for a decade through a double cornea transplant. The project has since assisted 14 young people with the same condition.

“Poor eyesight can seriously hamper children’s ability to thrive in so many ways,” says Engelman.

“We are always on the lookout for partnerships through which we can extend our reach, so we really welcomed the chance to partner with the Northern Cape Department of Health and Education.

“Thanks to all involved, 148 more children have received the glasses they need, and enjoyed a great day out.”
