Device facilitates learning

To assist with the continuation of Mathematics and Science extra lessons at the Boshof Combined School, an interactive whiteboard was funded by Boshof Solar Power.

This whiteboard enables the facilitator of the Maths and Science Leadership Academy (MSLA) in Kimberley to give input while a local teacher presents a lesson.

This also means that the MSLA facilitator does not have to travel interprovincially during lockdown and can adhere to social distancing protocols.

“We needed a way for the Maths and Science extra lesson learners to catch up on all the learning that has been missed this year,” explained Zuki Ndlela, economic development officer for Boshof Solar Power.

This device allows remote teaching, is interactive and projects images by connecting to a computer.

Although the main purpose of this electronic device is to assist with Mathematics and Science extra lessons, other learners at the school also benefit.

“These classes give learners the opportunity to practice the work done in class, and as we can focus on higher level questions, the learners become more confident and their marks improve,” said Nicolene Botha, teacher at the MLSA.

Funded by Boshof Solar Power, the MSLA, along with local teachers, facilitate these extra lessons presented to the learners at the Boshof Combined School and to two other schools in the area.

This partnership commenced in 2015 and is aimed at stimulating the desire in learners to study Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (Stem).

An estimated 80% of future jobs are expected to require youth to have some sort of Stem education.
