Fake retail staff caught red-handed

An alleged fraudster was arrested in the act by community members and police in the Kimberley Central Business District on Wednesday, 4 December, at about 17:00.

This suspect, with two other females, allegedly impersonated staff at two well-known retail outlets in Kimberley.

The suspects allegedly took valuables such as money and handbags from customers and sent them into a shopping queue, while accompanied by an elderly woman. The elderly suspect would somehow escape from the victim, together with the other two suspects.

One of the female victims was vigilant and screamed for assistance.

A 50-year-old suspect was arrested, while the two other suspects are still at large.

Police also confiscated a white VW Golf the suspects were travelling in. Police found some of the money of the victims, bank cards, cell phones and handbags in the suspect’s possession and inside the vehicle.

The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.

The police warn the public to be aware of these females dressed in uniform and wearing name badges of clothing stores and supermarkets, claiming they can assist customers with staff discount.

Anyone with information, or who has been a victim to a similar crime, is requested to call Lt.Col. Msimelelo Beni on 063-691-0926. The investigation continues.

The acting station commander in Kimberley, Col. Belinda Rhikotso, thanked the police members of C-Relief for their swift response and commended the community for their quick reaction and assistance.

  • Noordkaap previously reported about an eldery woman who was robbed of her handbag, jewellery and even car keys in a retail outlet, with the suspects using the same modus operandi.

This eldery woman was stranded for weeks without her car and suffered great distress after the incident.
