June the ideal time for Santa’s project
There is still time to get thoroughly involved in the Santa Shoebox Project. Last year, 957 297 shoeboxes were distributed.Photo: Santa Shoebox

It is not too early – or too late – to start with this year’s Santa Shoebox Project.

The organisers have outlined an easy schedule for making sure that the shoeboxes are filled by October to be distributed in time.

For those who have not started yet, it is easy enough to catch up with this schedule to prepare a box, of which March, April and May may have been left undone due to the lockdown:

  • March: Find a suitable box and clothing for the child that was allocated to you. If possible, include underwear.
  • April: A big tube of toothpaste and a toothbrush.
  • May: A facecloth and big bar of soap. If the allocated child is a teenage girl, sanitary products can be included.
  • June: Educational supplies for the 2021 school year according to the child’s grade. A reading book can be included.
  • July: Sweets and a toy according to the child’s gender and age.
  • August: In this month, you will receive important information on the child. Print the label, with the child’s name, and attach in to the outside of the Shoebox.
  • September: Decorate the shoebox and write a note to the child.
  • October: Drop off the shoebox to make sure it does not reach the child too late.

The Santa Shoebox Project originated in 2006 with 180 shoeboxes. In 14 years the project has grown impressively, with the number of shoeboxes donated reaching 957 297.

The shoeboxes are distributed to more than 1 000 recipient facilities each year, through more than 60 satellites in South Africa and Namibia.

Donors give gifts of essential items and treats to children whose name, age and gender are known. The minimum eight required items are a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, a facecloth, sweets, a toy, school supplies and an outfit of new, unused and age-appropriate clothing.
