HOOFARTIKEL: Keep young generation on track

We often hear about the frustrations ordinary people face when they report illegal activities perpetrated by young people who grew up before their eyes.

The situation is in many cases caused by the fact that young people are struggling to find jobs. Research has proven that those who are not in employment, education or training are more prone to be entrapped by crime in order to survive.

Millions of talented young people fall between the cracks year in and year out as they find themselves closed off from career opportunities.

The supply and consumption of drugs and alcohol is also blamed for the “moral decay” of communities in the province. The rate of drug abuse, poverty and violence keeps increasing yearly.

The school dropout rate, young people becoming highly depended on the government and the number of youth resorting to crime remains a huge crisis in this country.

Clearly more needs to be done to ensure that the “born-free” generation is not lost.

Even though the government works towards protecting the nation against Covid-19, the future of young people must also remain a top priority.

Hoewever, we should not only look to the government. Every South African has an important part to play.
