Matriculants given academic lifeline

To help ensure that teachers and learners overcome disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, matriculants studying Science and Mathematics recently received an academic lifeline in the form of tablets.

In order to assist with the challenges of online learning, the Sishen Iron Ore Company Community Development Trust (SIOC-CDT) donated tablets to Gr. 12 mathematics and physical science learners in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District and the Tsantsabane municipal area.

Even though learners have now returned to class there is a lot of catching up to be done that teachers cannot cover during school hours and within the few months left.

The trust launched an e-learning system programme through which learners can access digitalised learning materials, weekly live streamed lessons and online assessments, which will be captured and shared with teachers for further intervention. Data, sufficient for this course, will be provided and the usage thereof will be regularly monitored.

Dr Trevor van Louw, SIOC-CDT education project manager, says this is phase one of a pilot e-learning project.

“We earnestly hope that this programme will contribute in the outcome of recipients’ results, as we would like to see our children thrive and achieve remarkable goals that will improve the status quo of our beneficiary communities.”

He says they hope to expand the scope and be joined by other partners going forward.
