Poles removed

The removal of poles, for the aerial construction of optic fibre cables, commenced in heritage areas of Kimberley on Monday (21/09).

Jacques du Toit, CEO of Vox, announced on Monday that Frogfoot Networks, a lawful open access fibre infrastructure provider and subsidiary of Vox, will begin with the removal of poles from areas, including Belgravia, the Memorial Road area and Klisserville.

Apart from being seen as unsightly, complaints were received about poles being erected too close to entrance gates or security fences.

Questions were also asked about the authorisation of this method and that the Heritage Council was apparently not involved.

Du Toit said the company worked closely with the Sol Plaatje Municipality to obtain wayleaves and followed due process.

“We were notified by the public that some areas were heritage sites, after which we immediately stopped working. Frogfoot fully understands the sensitivity and it was never the intent to disrupt any heritage areas. We are committed to reinstating the areas as soon as possible.”

Frogfoot awaits the confirmation of the full extent of heritage sites that may fall within the coverage area from the Northern Cape Heritage Resources Authority.

The company has also appointed an independent heritage consultant to do the required heritage studies to inform and recommend the most suitable implementation of the infrastructure.
