Racism to be eradicated

Programmes to eradicate racism in schools will be put in place.

This according to Mac Jack, Northern Cape MEC for Education.

He addressed the media at the Northern Cape High School in Kimberley on Wednesday (30/10).

Jack and others involved listened to “all sides” of an alleged incident of racism that apparently transpired between a teacher and a learner in August.

Jack said the incident will now be investigated to get to the crux of the matter. The department has appointed a team of senior managers who will report back in 21 days.

He promised that he will address the school on racism on 15 January, the first school day of 2020.

“We need to put together a cohesive society. No bullying, drugs or racism will be allowed,” he said.

On a question regarding whether or not the teacher involved in the allegations is still at the school, Jack answered that they cannot jump to conclusions.

“We don’t want to be labelled as a school of racism,” said Joan Venter, principal of the school.

“I am really sorry that we are here (in this situation). We embrace diversity.”

She went on to say that many learners of all races excel at this school.

Jack emphasised that the department has a zero-tolerance policy towards racism.

He said what transpires at a school regarding this kind of behaviour is an indication of what is happening at community level.

“The school is a single entity; a mirror of society and a mirror of the nation.

“The segregation in schools becomes an extension of segregation around the nation, as they adopt the culture surrounding them,” he said.
