Rolling his way to Gold Coast

Charles Peter Mathewson (24), a keen bowls player since the age of seven, has been included in the Protea team to represent South Africa at the 2020 World Championships to be held at the Australian Gold Coast in March.

This member of the Sol Plaatje West End Bowls Club will be part of the three (triple) and four-player (fours) teams taking on teams from around the world.

CP, as he is also called, says his love for the game comes from his parents. At the age of nine he competed in his first national competition.

“What I love about this sport is that anyone can participate – young and old, any body type and even people with a disability,” he says.

Charles Peter and his mom, Annalie, were invited to take part in the 2020 South African Bowls Masters Championship at Wingate Park in Pretoria from Friday (07/02) to Sunday (09/02).

In this prestige championship, the 12 top players in different categories are invited to participate in the junior, open and veteran section.

Charles Peter received a bronze medal. It was his first time to participate in the men’s open masters category. Previously he played in eight masters championships, but in the junior category.

Due to his constant achievements, he is now part of the Protea team to respresent South Africa in Australia.

In 2018, this keen bowls player was part of the junior Protea team who represented the country in Hong Kong.
