Skateboarding brings hope

The Kimberley Action Sports Festival, presented by the Kimberley Diamond Cup, will be held in Kimberley from Thursday (05/11) at 12:00 to Saturday (07/11) at the Kimberley Skatepark Arena.

A total of 64 national and 26 international athletes will feature in this event.

Maruping Lekwene, MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, said they find it encouraging that the organisers added additional contests to the event line-up and that so many different countries are reached.

“We are happy to welcome the contingent of female skaters, participants of BMX and FMX shows,” he said.

“We are sure these competitors will inspire South African youth, and particularly our growing fraternity of aspiring skateboarders.”

Fans will be entertained by a Northern Cape fashion show, KDC Stance Motorshow and a music concert that will feature both local and national artists and traditional groups.

According to the MEC, the Skateboarding for Hope programme has been revitalised as part of the government youth development mandate.

This initiative was launched by the Northern Cape government to offer the youth the opportunity to challenge themselves both mentally and physically.

The programme gives local youngsters a healthy, affordable and accessible lifestyle alternative and the chance to become part of the fastest-growing sport in the country.

As a way of combating socio-economic problems affecting the youth, Skateboarding for Hope presents roadshows with skateboarding clinics and life skills training.
