Tips help keep children safe during festive season

The SAPS urges parents to follow these tips to keep their children safe during the festive season:released se tips will help parents to ensure their children’s safety during the festive season:

  • When on a family outing, enforce the rule that you and your child must be able to see each other at all times.them and they must always be able to see you.
  • Use the “two giant steps” rule: Your kids must never be more than two giant steps away from you.
  • Teach your children that if they be separated from you, they should look for a “safe stranger” – such as a mom with kids – to help them for help such as a mom with kids or a cash register person.
  • Tell your child never to leave the mall or store to go looking for you, no matter what anyone tells them.
  • Dress your child in brightly coloured clothes.
  • Consider using a harness for toddlers.
  • Establish the “check first” rule with older children. Before going anywhere in a public place, such as another store, play area or the restroom, they must always check with you first.
  • Public facilities are not “convenient babysitters.” Do not leave your children alone at video arcades, movie theaters, play areas or other public places. Predators are known to look for unsupervised kids.
  • Take young children into the restroom with you. Whenever possible, look for well-lit restrooms in high traffic areas.
  • Make sure your child knows your cellphone number.
