The Kimberley Equestrian Centre (KEC) celebrated its 60th anniversary on 12 September by hosting the Thunder Cup.

According to Natalie Birch, KEC committee member, 52 entries were received for the event.

The Thunder Cup trophy for show jumping was won by Annette Rousseau and her horse Callaho Commodes, while Telene du Plessis, riding Dageraad Wens, claimed the development trophy for show jumping.

The Thunder Cup trophy for dressage was won by Alan Conradie and his horse Jalishia Royal Lady, while the dressage development trophy was awarded to Joanie Blumenthal and Razdi Ruby Dooby.

The KEC, next to the Samaria Road outside Kimberley, was founded in 1960.

It used to be a hospital for the mules and donkeys working in the mine.

Once repurposed, the centre was started with seven members and their horses.

Birch says the activities at the centre cater to the entire family.

Since its inception, members have been offered free lessons on weekends – a tradition that continues to this day.

The KEC has produced many top-class riders and competes at top level.

The centre offers stabling, outrides and lessons.
