Water leaks frustrate residents

Leaking water pipes are a common sight in Kimberley.

As they believe the Sol Plaatje Municipality does not prioritise this issue, several residents have turned to Noordkaap to voice their complaintsthe fixing of pipes as a priority.

They are unanimous in their biggest concern: While the country is experiencing a severe drought and the availability of fresh water keeps declining, valuable fresh water is allowed to flow away in the streets.

To further aggravate the residents, they have had to endure daily water cuts for a few weeks.

A resident of Sesing Street in White City, Galeshewe, told the newspaper that municipal workers dug a hole in front of his house on 12 November. He does not know why the hole was dug.

“A water pipe has been leaking ever since,” he said.

“I have reported it to the municipality, but it is yet to be fixed.”

The pipe was still leaking by Monday (25/11).

“Water is being wasted. Besides that, it is costing me money,” he said.

A resident of Belgravia said the water leak in Milner Road, causing fresh water to flow away in Du Toitspan Road, was reported to the municipality nearly three weeks ago – to no avail.

In Herlear, on the corner of Olympia and Leander Street, another stream of fresh water is flowing.

All the locations of leaking water pipes in Kimberley are too many to mention.

Sharon Steyn of the Northern Cape Chamber of Commerce said residents should call the Sol Plaatje Municipality’s infrastructure Call Centre on 053-830-6111 to report water leaks and other infrastructure problems. She also stressed the importance of getting a reference number.

Residents are advised to take photos of the leaks and post it on the Sol Plaatje Municipality’s Facebook page and that of Mayor Patrick Mabilo.

Photos can also be sent in a Facebook message.
